Nitpicking: They did not sell the avocados illegally. They came into possession of them illegally. Avocado sales are not restricted or prohibited.

It was illegal selling, they were selling for cash, probably at a discount out of a credit only market, then pocketing the money. Some wholesale markets can only sell on credit.
